About three years ago I had a broken right leg and decided to quit my gym membership because I figured I would not be using it for quite some time. When I recovered I decided to explore other ways to get fit besides going to the gym. People always tell me that they pay a ridiculous amount for a monthly gym membership and barely ever use it! So I wanted to share with you fun new ways to workout. They are not all free, but are all completely different ways to to get fit besides sweating it out at a gym.

6 ways to get fit without a gym

1. Create your own Gym at Home: I know this one isn’t too creative, but seriously, you CANNOT make excuses for not working out when you have a fitness area set up in the comfort of your own home. Online suppliers such as Physique Sports have all the equipment you need to get your own gym set up in your house. This, along with a custom training program that you could find online, gives you the tools to transform your body without even stepping foot in a public gym. I am lucky that my husband has a lot of weights and I have an elliptical and spin bike. I know someone who got their equipment from Strengthandfitness.ie and they love it. If you do your research, you’ll be able to find some great equipment. It can get pretty expensive but if you have the funds I highly suggest getting your own cardio equipment and weights and creating a ‘fitness area’ in your home. Our area is set up in our garage, which means we can only park one car in there, but come on, fitness is one of my top priorities. You could also set up your own personal gym in a spare bedroom, office, or basement. You can buy cardio equipment new or used just by looking online, there are a ton of different sites. I am personally a fan of the PRECOR equipment. As for weights I suggest you have a set of 5, 8, 10, and 15 pounds. And extra equipment such as resistance bands, a stability ball, and a foam roller are always nice to have. You can buy these at Target, Walmart, Amazon, or any Sporting Goods Store.

2. Thedailyburn.com: This website is absolutely amazing! When you become a member you can choose from several different types of workouts from well known trainers. Each trainer runs a different program. They have cardio programs, pilates, strength training, dancing, and even a yoga program for pregnancy. My favorite workouts are in the INFERNO program. When becoming a member you have access to all of the workouts and can even create your own profile to set goals and a nutritional plan with a coach. They are currently running a free 30-day trial and the cost after that is only $12.95 a month. Even if you only do 4 workouts a month (one each week) that means you paid about $3 a class. Usually to just walk into a class at gym it can cost you at least $10. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this website, give it a try! And if it’s not for you end your membership before the 30 days is up.

3. Body Weight Exercises: Even if you do have access to gym equipment you should be doing body weight exercises for cardio and strength training. I have learned many exercise from using Pinterest, workout DVD’s, books, or other fitness websites. Here is a great list of 50 Bodyweight Exercises. I then create my own routines using different exercises to work different parts of my body.

Typically I use a Tabata Timer. Read about Tabata Workouts in one of my previous posts here: Tabata Workout. And here are some other ways incorporate bodyweight exercises into a workout:

  • 20-30 repetitions of 10-12 different exercises
  • 2-3 rounds of 10 different exercises for 40-50 seconds each
  • Ladder. Start with 10 repetitions of several different exercises and count your way down to 1 repetition of each.
  • Run for 5-10 minutes. Stop and do a bodyweight exercise. Repeat this process until the end of your run.

4. Classpass.com: I have not tried Classpass personally but know several people that have. The idea is that if you live in or near one of the participating cities and become a member you can go to an unlimited amount of fitness classes each month. And when you travel you can use your Classpass membership in different cities. There is a monthly fee, but I would definitely recommend this for someone that does not enjoy running or using cardio equipment because you can try different types of classes and find what works best for you. I have been meaning to become a member, but most of the gyms or studios are about 45 minutes from my house, so I hope to become a member this summer when I have a little more time.

5. Popsugar.com: I’ve mentioned this website and a few of my favorite videos in a previous post. It’s a TOTALLY FREE website with fitness videos, many of them are hosted by celebrity trainers. There are also fitness guides and nutritional tips. I love that there are videos to work specific parts of your body. Here are the latest two videos I have been obsessed with doing each week:

6. KaylaItsines.com: Kayla is a personal trainer from Australia who created EGuides to help people loss weight. You can purchase a nutritional and/or a workout guide. The EGuides provide 12 weeks of workouts and nutritional plans. The guides are a great tool if you are newer to bodyweight exercises and strength training or if you are looking for ways to switch up your workout routine. Her guides are easy to read and understand, she has you doing something different EVERYDAY, and the workouts get progressively harder as you get stronger.

I hope you will try some of these latest fitness trends. And if I didn’t list it, what is your favorite way to workout without having to go the gym?
