You all should know by now I get far too excited when it comes to healthy food and others that share my joy and passion for cooking and eating it. Which was why I was thrilled when Beachbody announced they were creating online cooking episodes for their On Demand Subscribers. The name of the program is Fixate and it showcases how to cook delicious healthy meals using the portion control containers. It’s hosted by Autumn Calabrese, celebrity trainer and creator of the 21 Day Fix and her brother and chef Bobby Calabrese. The episodes can be watched on any device because they are accessed through Beachbody On Demand. Since the launch of the Fixate program on August 18th I recently was able to sit down and watch the foundations videos along with a few cooking episodes. I was seriously blown away with how well this program was put together. It is going to be a game changer for my Beachbody clients and anyone interested in learning how to eat a cleaner diet without having to sacrifice flavor.
Eating healthy IS delicious and this program proves that. But I know there are still many people out there that are skeptical of ‘health foods’. So today I wanted to create a list of reasons I often hear from friends, family, and co-workers as to why they can’t eat healthy. And then I wanted to try to help you resolve them. Below I listed the biggest excuses I hear from people as to why they struggle with establishing a healthier lifestyle and after each I’m going to address how programs like Fixate and the Beachbody portion control containers can help solve these problems.
I don’t have the time to meal plan/prep…..
Autumn says, “Being prepared isn’t half the battle, it IS the battle” Give me ONE hour. Maybe Two hours MAX if you want to knock out the prep for an entire week. In the Fixate program Autumn goes through two different meal prep plans with foods you could mix and match or you could prep the same meal for all five days of the work week. You cook all the food ahead of time and then portion it in containers for the week. Yes, your kitchen will be a disaster for a little while as you’re cooking and prepping, but in no time all your meals will be set. Think of how much time that would free up in your evenings. I can’t giveaway all of Autumn’s meal prep secrets without having you watch the show, but here’s an examples of a few different items you could make ahead and prep for the week: Egg cups, oatmeal, turkey and guacamole, chicken, and quinoa.
I feel like I won’t get to eat enough food when on the Beachbody Meal Plan…..
Here’s an example of what I typically eat each week in the 1200-1500 calorie range:
Meal 1 Post Workout: Vanilla Shakeology Shake with strawberries and spinach. Meal 2 Mid-morning: Oatmeal with 1-2 tsp nut butter. Meal 3 Lunch: Salad with raw vegetables, grilled chicken, and dressing with a small apple. Meal 4 Afternoon snack: Two hard boiled eggs or an energy bite or bar. Meal 5 Dinner: This is usually the only meal I don’t prep ahead because I like making something different each night. My favorite dinner is taco ground turkey with peppers and onion, brown rice, guacamole, and cheese.
And I eat in the smallest calorie range, so you might fit in a higher range where you get to eat more food. Often times I find myself more hungry in the afternoon or evening so it’s totally fine to add an extra serving of protein or of veggies, here’s another example of What I ate in a day while on the 21 Day Fix program. When you’re eating real food you actually get to eat MORE of it since it’s typically lower in calories than other processed foods.
Healthy food doesn’t taste good…..
So how do these recipes sound from the Fixate program, Grilled Peaches with Mascarpone? Wasabi Cream Cheese Salmon Burgers? Refreshing Dill Cucumber Salad? Oh and I also just said my favorite meal was a TACO bowl! Who doesn’t like taco’s? The 21 Day Fix Meal plan is so versatile. There is plenty of room for variety and still sticking with the plan and grocery list. All the recipes in the Fixate program list the container equivalents and different variations. And Autumn and Bobby will be posting different videos each week which gives you plenty of different recipes to try at home.
I can’t afford healthy food…..
You need to watch Autumn’s Pantry Raid Foundation Video. She goes through all the healthy grains, fats, sweeteners, legumes, and other essentials we should all be keeping in our pantry and the items we should toss. But this doesn’t mean you need to go out and buy every item she lists. You could easily gradually stock your pantry with these healthier essentials and get rid of your white carbs and processed sugars. You can afford it a little at a time and your body and longterm health will thank you!
I can’t cook so how am I supposed to eat healthy…..
I was almost stumped on this one. But then I thought, guess what, at some point we ALL didn’t know how to cook. We learned by watching and doing. This is exactly why I love Fixate. You could view or download a PDF file of any recipe or you could watch the short video where Autumn and Bobby cook the meal in the kitchen and show you step by step how to prepare it. I learned so much from watching cooking shows in college, it really is a great way to learn! You could do the same now! Watching cooking shows (using open source media softwares like Kodi and an additional kodi vpn for extra security) could go a long way in helping you towards your fitness journey.
I don’t want to give up my favorite foods…..
I totally get this one. I used to think that eating healthy meant I could NEVER eat pizza or ice cream which are two of my favorite foods. I used to deprive myself of these foods and when I caved and ate them I over indulged. There are so many healthy variations for some of your favorite comfort foods, but sometimes you crave the REAL THING. And that’s ok, we all eat a meal not on the meal plan every so often. It’s all about moderation and balance. In case you have a craving for keto apple crisp or brownies, you can either order them or make it from scratch. Just make sure you balance it out. You may have heard of the 80/20 rule many health and fitness professionals follow. Where they eat healthy 80% of the time and have a few cheats 20%. I figure if you break that down into meals, that’s about 3-5 times a week you might snack on something or enjoy a meal, not on the plan. Sometimes I treat myself to a healthy cookie treat other times I just need some soft serve and all the chocolate and sprinkles!
Regardless of what your excuses are as to why you or someone you know might be finding it difficult to establish a healthier lifestyle, the Beachbody programs can be life changing.
