With my Irish heritage I couldn’t pass up a chance to share a St. Patricks Day themed recipe with you today. There are so many ways to celebrate this holiday, music, green beer, corned beef & cabbage, potato soup, and all things mint. This Mint Chocolate Protein Shake recipe is a healthier way to enjoy the classic chocolate shamrock shake. And can be enjoyed as a yummy treat or a post workout meal because it’s packed with carbs, healthy fats, and over 30 grams of protein.
To make this protein shake I use a few simple ingredients: almond milk, a banana, protein powder, cocoa powder, mint extract, and a mint flavored bar. I used and tested this recipe with a Quest Mint Chocolate Brownie Bar, but there are several other mint flavored bars such as Larabar, RX Bar, Square Bar, or Premier Protein you could use. Or I also tried omitting the mint bar entirely and it was still delicious. I just love the crushed bar along with some cocoa nibs on top, YUM!
For protein powder I personally use either Shakeology, Naked Whey, or Quest Vanilla Protein. I don’t typically buy chocolate protein, because you can easily make it taste chocolaty by adding cocoa powder. But feel free to use a chocolate protein, plant based, or add 1/2 cup greek yogurt instead. Mint extract is another key ingredient, which can easily be found in the baking aisle of your grocery store. Mint and chocolate just pair so well together and just a tiny bit of mint goes a long way. I tested this recipe with mint, but you could try peppermint extract as well.
Gather all the ingredients in a high powered blender, I love and use my Vitamix daily, then blend until smooth! I am salivating just thinking about how delicious this combo is!
Now I am new to topping my shakes or smoothies. I thought the concept was weird at first since I just want to drink my shake. But let me tell you, a little something chewy or crunchy tastes amazing, and it’s so fun when you can eat it with a spoon. I added the other half of the Quest protein bar cut into small chunks and some cocoa nibs to the top of my smoothie. You could also add chocolate chips or garnish with fresh mint leaves.

- 8 ounces milk or almond milk
- 1 medium banana
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- ¼ teaspoon mint extract
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- mint chocolate protein bar (divided)
- ice cubes
- Place the milk, banana, cocoa powder, mint extract, protein powder, and half of a mint chocolate protein bar cut into small pieces into a high powered blender, add 4-6 ice cubes.
- Blend on high until smooth.
- Pour into a glass and option to top with the remaining protein bar, cocoa nibs, and/or chocolate chips.
